Full leather binding Black Oasis goatskin; gold-tooled title on smooth spine; pattern across the whole front cover board with gold-tooled freehand lines, half circles, and dots, as well as accents tooled in white and red; gilt head edge, sewn endbands; pastedown and flyleaf anthracite-coloured paper. Drop-back box covered with unbleached cloth and lined with molleton; title embossed in gold on black leather label.

About the artist: Martin Jaegle completed his bookbinding apprenticeship in Zurich from 1947 to 1950, followed by his master’s certificate in 1960. After holding various positions, he was “brought” by Thorvald Henningsen into his studio in the centre of Zurich’s Niederdorf district in 1952, where he remained until 1962. Jaegle also took courses in gilding with Thorvald Henningsen and Friedhold Morf, calligraphy with H. Meier and W. Wälchli, colour theory with Emil Mehr and drawing with Frühauf, Bärtschi and Fischer. In 1956/1957, he increased his knowledge and perfected his skills in hand gilding with Raymond Mondange at the École Estienne in Paris.
