Gottfried Keller: Spiegel, das Kätzchen

Alfred Scherz Verlag, Bern, 1965, Duo Bücher. With the novella Spiegel the Cat, the realist Keller continued the tradition of the animal fable. The cat is called Spiegel (mirror) because of his shiny fur. He is suave and has the gift of saving his head by telling lies. In order not to starve to death, Spiegel concludes a contract with the sorcerer Pineiss, who must feed him until Spiegel is fat enough to be slaughtered. In return, the cunning Spiegel arranges a supposedly beautiful and rich wife for him. On the wedding night, however, the bride turns out to be a witch…

About the artist: Roland Meuter might currently be the only Swiss binding artist who can make a living from this craft! He earned his reputation through his successful participation in competitions at home and abroad. He still takes part in large and important exhibitions and has an own stand at Frankfurter Buchmesse.

In his younger years, he also participated in Hans Rohrer’s filmmaking, contributing to several professional films on bookbinding techniques, such as making headbands, hand gilding or edge gilding.
