Paper case binding Painted laid paper; invisible reinforcements on head and tail red leather; gilt head edge, simple endbands in black leather; endpapers same paper as book block; front cover board signed JAEGLE vertically in black ink at the bottom of the binding. Lined drop-back box covered with unbleached cloth.

About the artist: Martin Jaegle completed his bookbinding apprenticeship in Zurich from 1947 to 1950, followed by his master’s certificate in 1960. After holding various positions, he was “brought” by Thorvald Henningsen into his studio in the centre of Zurich’s Niederdorf district in 1952, where he remained until 1962. Jaegle also took courses in gilding with Thorvald Henningsen and Friedhold Morf, calligraphy with H. Meier and W. Wälchli, colour theory with Emil Mehr and drawing with Frühauf, Bärtschi and Fischer. In 1956/1957, he increased his knowledge and perfected his skills in hand gilding with Raymond Mondange at the École Estienne in Paris.
