About the artist: Max Koelliker was born in Basel in 1910. He received his master’s certificate in 1937 and opened his own bookbindery at St. Johanns-Vorstadt 44, Basel, in 1943. Koelliker was known as a good teacher and trained, among others, Sepp Rudin. He loved hand gilding and demanding bookbinding work much more than so-called “routine”. Many of his fine bindings were commissioned by Hans Grether, a patron of the Basel “Daig”, the wealthy citizens of Basel, and owner of pharmaceutical company Doetsch Grether AG. Koelliker was a sociable man. He had a good relationship with Ignatz Wiemeler, the renowned binding artist from Hamburg. Max Koelliker lost early his first wife, who had been a strong support, and, only a few years later, his second wife. He died at an old age and demented as a recluse.
